Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician

Qualification: Level 3

Duration: 36 months

Apprentices can work in either a dealership that focuses on a particular manufacturer, or for an independent garage, franchise or large fleet operator that deals with many different vehicles. They work on all the systems found within the vehicle. The nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. The day-to-day tasks faced by the technician are constantly changing, driven by the introduction of ever more complex technologies and diagnostic techniques. The growing complexity of today’s vehicles and the pressure to deliver a high-quality customer experience requires the retail automotive sector to attract and train high calibre individuals.

Apprenticeship:

Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician

Qualification: Level 3

Duration: 36 months

  • New learners are assessed by a Skills Coach to ensure their suitability for the programme.
  • After this, they will complete an initial assessment and scoping to identify areas of improvement, and development goals for the apprenticeship.
  • An apprenticeship induction is then held for new learners, where they will be introduced to the schedule of study

  • Using hand tools and equipment in a heavy vehicle work environment 
  • Support for job roles in the automotive environment
  • Conduct routine heavy vehicle maintenance 
  • Remove and replace heavy vehicle chassis units and components 
  • Remove and replace heavy vehicle engine system units and components
  • Remove and replace heavy vehicle electrical system units and components 
  • Remove and replace heavy vehicle transmission and driveline system units and components
